POLICE will set up temporary police beats in the neighbourhood around Jalan Tengku Badar, Jalan Kastam and Jalan Bungor in Port Klang to deter criminals from "terrorising" residents in the area.
South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Mat Yusop said police would also step up patrols around the neighbourhood especially between 2am and 5.30am daily — the usual time when burglars and robbers strike at the homes.
He said this at a dialogue held following dissatisfaction from the residents in the area as they were concerned criminals were having a free rein in not only robbing the residents but also brutally attacking them over the last few months.
ACP Muhammad who led the South Klang top police brass in a face-to-face dialogue with about 200 residents of Jalan Derun, Jalan Gelam, Jalan Damar Minyak, Jalan Seroja, Jalan Ara, Jalan Cucur Atap and Jalan Nau gave his assurance there would be more police personnel deployed as 22 crime cases were recorded in the area over the last two months.

Also present at the event were Klang MP Charles Santiago, South Klang CID chief DSP Nik Rosazhan Abdul Rahman, South Klang management head DSP Saman Daud, Port Klang police station head C/Insp Shukri Ismail and Klang Municipal councillors Robert Choo and Selvadurai Subramaniam.
"A few days ago we established mobile umbrella police units at a few locations where three policeman would be stationed from morning to late evening.
"Two policemen would patrol on motorcycles while one would be stationed at the umbrella booth," said Mohammad, adding mobile patrol cars would also be despatched to patrol the neighbourhood more frequently to look out for suspicious characters.
Muhammad said it was imperative residents immediately set up a committee to oversee safety issues in the neighbourhood.
"This committee should have a representative from the different roads and they should have a monthly meeting with the Port Klang police station head C/Insp Shukri to devise strategies to deter opportunities for crime," he added.
Santiago said he and the two councillors would lobby the Klang Municipal Council to place closed-circuit TV cameras (CCTVs) in the neighbourhood.
During the dialogue, a victim of a recent burglary in Jalan Damar Minyak, who together with her older sister was brutally attacked with an iron rod by the assailants before they were relieved of cash and valuables, said she was unhappy police had brought a suspect to her home for identification purpose.
"We are severely traumatised by the incident and we hope the cops can understand this and not bring any more suspects to our home as it only creates more anguish for us," she said.
Another resident from Jalan Bungor said the huge turnout by residents at the dialogue reflected their fears and concerns and appealed to the police to restore peace and order in their neighbourhood.
"The criminals have taken our freedom and the people here are unable to have proper sleep each night because of this sudden reign of unchallenged terror and brutality. They have become so bold they can target the same place after a few weeks.
"We really need the police to apprehend the criminals so that the residents here including the young and old can go about their daily lives without worrying about their safety at their own homes," she said to the applause of the crowd.
Another resident, FL Wong from Jalan Derun urged residents to switch on their porch and backyard lights every night as criminals would have less chance to break into their homes when the place was adequately lit.
"The slight increase in electricity bills is a small price to pay for safety. Neighbours should be alert and call each other whenever they spot outsiders lurking and behaving suspiciously especially after midnight," said Wong who initiated a move with his neighbours to carry out patrolling around their area a few weeks ago.
At the function Klang muncipal councillor Robert Choo handed over RM500 to Francis Cruz, the protem chairman of the Neighbourhood Safety and Security Committee to kickstart their awareness campaign on crime prevention.
